Read "The boy who snared the wind and the shaman's daughter" and have students fill out the worksheet on p. 8 of center for learning book

Discuss Literature Term Assignment for year (1 per week)
Go over syllabus for year
Pass out Novel Notecard books and discuss what we will be doing all year
pass out "The Hobbit"
Assign "map" to draw and include in their notebooks (due Friday)

assign first 5 gr/lt, 3 spelling, and 2 novel notecards for test on Friday

--4 Novels
We will be reading and discussing and doing projects over the following novels:
*The Princess Bride
*Oliver Twist
*To Kill A Mockingbird
*The Hobbit
You will also be keeping a spiral journal over each novel which will include a summary over what you read each week, 2 quotes that were meaningful to you from the week's reading, and why you chose the quotes.  The journal will also be used to do any novel writing projects.

--Writing Skills
You will learn to write and practice the following types of papers:
*writing prompts
*research paper (a ten pager—yes, indeed!!)
*comparison/contrast papers
*5 paragraph papers
*persuasive papers
*summary/response papers
*reaction papers
--Greek/Latin Roots
You will learn the definitions of 5 Greek/Latin roots each week and take a test over them the last Language Class each week.  You will not only need to learn the current week's roots, but also remember all previous weeks’ words
--Vocabulary Words
You will learn the spelling and definitions of 2 words each week and take a test over them the last Language Class each week.  You will not only need to learn the current week's spelling and definitions, but also remember all previous weeks’ words
--Literature Book
You will read, discuss, and answer questions over stories and poems in the Literature Book
--Novel Notecards
You will use the Novel Notecard book to write 2 notecards each week.  You will then be tested over the current notecards as well as all previous notecards on the same day you take your vocabulary/Latin/Greek tests.  Look at the Novel Notecard Link to discover how to do the notecards each week.
--Speech
Yes, that word that brings fear into the hearts of all.  Did you know that most people would rather have a root canal than do a speech?  Hopefully, at the end of the section, you will find that it is not all that bad.
Here is what we will be doing in speech:

--resumes, college applications, success sheets, recommendation letters, etc.

You will be putting together a notebook complete with info on Lit terms such as:  Soliloquy,
Synecdoche and many others
