Student Anthology
Anthology--"An anthology is a collection of literary works chosen by the compiler. It may be a collection of poems, short stories, plays, songs, or excerpts."

You will be creating an anthology during the 3rd quarter of this year
(due March 18).  It will consist of 30 literary works (5 due each week).

The works you will be choosing for your anthology will be taken from each of the 5 categories:
1.  poetry
2.  music
3.  movies
4.  novels
5.  short stories

You would naturally think that if I assigned 5 categories and I wanted 30 works by the end of the year, you would have to come up with 6 for each
category.  But I'm giving you a little room to "wiggle" since some of you might really struggle finding 6 poems, etc.  So here's the deal--you must have a minimum of 3 selections from each category, but when all is said and done, you must have 30 works.  This means that if you only have 3 poems, you must make up the lack of poems by having more of other categories.  So, for example, you could have 3 poems, 8 songs, 7 movies, 6 short stories, and 6 novels.  Since this adds up to 30, you are OK.

So, what do I want you to do with all of this.  I'll tell you.  Pick works from each category that have meaning to you.  Works that make you really think and define who you are, what you are thinking during this chapter of your life.  Maybe you just really like the work.  Then, follow the directions for each category:
1.  poetry--give me the name and poet, give me the entire poem, then tell me why you                       picked it in a 2 paragraph essay.  What did you like about the poem?
What did it teach you about life, etc.?

2.  music--give me the name of the song, the singer/band, name of the album, year it was                            recorded, give me the lyrics of the song, then tell me why you picked it in a 2
   paragraph essay.

3.  movies--give me the name of the movie, the director, 3 of the main characters, when it
was released.  Then give me a 1/2 page summary of the film.  Finally, share
with me why you chose it in about a 125 word essay.

4.  novels--give me the name of the novel, the author, date it was published, ISBN number.
Then give me a 1/2 page summary of the novel.  Finally, share
with me why you chose it in about a 125 word essay. (you can use Sparknotes for                        this)

5.  short stories--give me the name of the story, the author, date it was published.  Then
give me a 1/2 page summary of the short story.  Finally, share with me why you
chose it in about a 125 word essay.

This must be typed--no exceptions.
Extra points will be given if you choose to add artistic talent to this project.

Reasons I am assigning this project:
--it helps me and others get to know you better.  Taste in literature, music, movies, etc.                     shares a little about who you really are as a person.  It is a reflection of what you love                  and what you appreciate.
--it forces you to analyze your culture around you
--it helps you develop writing skills in the area of the essay as well as
strengthen your ability to communicate abstract thought.
