Once you feel like a pro open fire "cooker", give it a shot.  Start off with something simple like hotdogs, then work up to hamburgers and salmon.  For me, the key to cooking salmon is to put the fillets over the fire, skin down, don't turn over fish while grilling, and cook until flaky.
This link will teach you the basics on how to prepare a good cooking campfire.  This is an important read, even if you think you know what you are doing.
