V.  Course Description:
This is a first year algebra course in which you will learn to reason symbolically. The key content involves writing, solving, and graphing linear and quadratic equations, including systems of two linear equations in two unknowns. Quadratic equations are solved by factoring, completing the square, graphically, or by application of the quadratic formula. The course also includes study of monomial and polynomial expressions, inequalities, exponents, functions, rational expressions, ratio, and proportion. Algebraic skills are applied in a wide variety of problem-solving situations.

VI.Prerequisites: Prealgebra with a grade of “C” or above

VII.Class Participation:  Students are expected to ask relevant questions and be prepared each day.

VIII.    Required Texts:  Saxon, J.H. (2003).  Algebra 1 (3rd ed.). Norman, OK:  Saxon Publishers.

IX.Required Written Work:  Tests will be announced several days prior to the test day and listed on the course syllabus and web page.  If for some reason you are absent, missed tests must be made up within one week of the scheduled test date.  A notebook must be kept by each student containing notes from class lectures, examples from lectures, and additional notes you include from the textbook reading.  Also, after each section of notes students will place homework assignments.  Each week’s notes and homework will be due the next Monday.  Homework will be assigned in each class and you are encouraged to keep up with the work since math builds upon already learned concepts.  Late homework/notebooks will be penalized a letter grade for each class day it is late.  Work must be shown or no credit will be given.
